Santuary of the Virgen de las Nieves, patron saint of Almagro.
5 km from Bolaños de Calatrava, you'll find the Sanctuary of the Virgen de las Nieves, patron saint of Almagro. Due to found documents, it is believed that the first chapel dates from the 12th century. At disposition of the first Marquess of Santa Cruz, Alvaro de Bazan y Guzmán, his son rebuilt the chapel from 1637 to 1641, to honour the Virgin who protected him during the Battle of Lepanto. The chapel shows different coats of arms of the Marquess-family. In the 16th century the chapel was located on a quite important Camino Real ("royal path") which linked Portugal and Extremadura with the eastern regions.
It is said that the nearby restaurant, is the oldest in Spain, according to a document of the Historical Archive, which attests that in the 17th century the inn served already meals. There is also a curious old bullring next to the chapel.
Visit the Sanctuary, the Bullring and the nearby thermal baths, that reopened after 100 years.
Nice stop before continuing on to the Tablas de Daimiel National Park. For lunch we recommend Los Menchero in Bolaños de Calatrava (Phone +34 926 87 00 61) or El Corregido in Almagro (Phone +34 926 86 06 48).
