San Carlos del Valle was 1993 declared "Bien de Interés Cultural" (BIC), a site of acknowledged national historic interest.
San Carlos del Valle is located in the southeast of the province of Ciudad Real, blonging to the Campo de Montiel. Also known as the "Village of The Christ", referring to the majesty of its Church and Plaza.
Particularly striking is the Plaza Mayor, for its great architectural and popular interest, comparable only to the beauty of the plazas in Almagro and Villanueva de los Infantes. It has an almost rectangular shape, 53 meters long and 21 wide, formed by Tuscan columns supporting floors and lintel galleries, wooden footings and balusters.
On one side of the square, in the background, is the Town Hall, whose facade has a cantilevered balcony on wooden corbels; on another side there's private house with typical columned courtyard, arches and upper gallery.
This square was created as a court of the magnificent Church of Cristo del Valle, built on the shrine of Santa Elena, where, according to tradition, a miraculous Christ appeared and left in a haystack a strange walker. The plaza has been restored and is well preserved, making it one of best examples of late Baroque in the province. In 1993 it was declared Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), a site of acknowledged national historic interest.
Visit the village and especially its Plaza Mayor and the Church of Cristo del Valle. Coming from La Casa del Rector, spa-hotel in Almagro, you might visit also Villanueva de los Infantes and the bullring and Palacio-Casa Don Diego in La Solana.
